San Xavier Mission School in Tuscon, Arizona, is set to re-open this year after a two-year closure. Br. Ponchie Vasquez, pastor of San Xavier del Bac Mission, told local TV station KGUN 9 that the school raised $500,000 for renovations to its main building, and will hire 13 new teachers and staff.
Br. Ponchie has served the Tohono O’odham reservation community since 2002. He says the school, which did not have enough students and teachers to keep its budget before, will teach students about Tohono O’odham culture and traditions, as well as the Catholic faith.
